What was the roll of the church in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and what is the legacy of this piece of historic legislation?

Gerald Smith, Associate Professor of History at the University of Kentucky, addressed these important questions in a lecture at Southeastern Seminary on the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

In this lecture, Smith surveys African-American history in order to place the 1964 Civil Rights Act in a historical context. He sheds light on the events, individuals and organizational forces that helped create this “child of a storm,” as Martin Luther King Jr. dubbed it.
