How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy
By Jenny Odell (Viking, 2019)
Mullins: I’ve recently finished Jenny Odell’s How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy, and would recommend it for anyone interested in learning how to stop giving their attention to what corporations, social media, and advertisers deem valuable and start giving it to things that are local, beautiful, and life-giving.
Though Odell’s book is not overtly religious, its arguments and strategies have especially profound implications for Christians who want to love our neighbors well, care for the world in which we’ve been placed, and clear time and space to reflect on the God who made us.
